About the Author

Jerry Pierson

I am an every guy sort of man: flawed, relatable and ultimately redeemable. Carrie and I were married for nearly 43 years before her death early in 2023. I had the good fortune to serve in the US Army for 27 years in health care and clinical research and development positions. My Army work opened a door to a follow-on leadership role in the National Institues of Health involving regulatory support, clinical safety, and research participant protections. I am the proud father of two sons, Dan and Ben, father-in-law to Renee and grandfather to Fern.

Not in the book because it only recently happened was that I married Sarah, a woman that Carrie indirectly pointed me towards. Perhaps that is a follow-on book unto itself. Sarah, a semi-retired minister, was widowed for 34 years. Our family now includes her two daughters and their husbands as well as eight more grandkids.

Frequently Asked Questions

Three weeks after Carrie's death, I found a journal that she kept in college and her early years of our marriage. While I was entering grief, reading the journal entries inspired me to tackle my feelings by writing through the pain. I had a lot of help along the way! Many thanks to my writing coach, Laura Gaddis, and to Indigo River Publishing.

This book should appeal to a wide and diverse group of readers:

  • First, and obviously, fellow travelers on the journey of grief, though each of us walks a different path.
  • Caregivers, regardless if for a spouse, parent, child, friend or other relative.
  • Cancer patients and cancer support groups as they can learn much from Carrie's brave battle.
  • Teachers and counselors, for inspiration in their careers.
  • Health care workers: doctors, nurses, pharmacists, physical and occupational therapists and others who want to read something positive about their professions.
  • Hospice workers and individuals working in the ministry who support those who have lost a loved one or are working with those on the terminal path towards death.
  • Military spousal groups as many current and former military spouses can relate to Carrie's experiences traveling about the country and the world along with their service member spouse.
  • Book clubs, as they are often looking for a fairly easy read and though the topic can initially seem depressing, the overall message is one of hope, resilience, perserverance and an uplifting ending.
  • People who like to journal! You never know what will become of the words that you write decades after they are written!
  • Finally, anyone who wants to be able to comfort someone who is either going through a chronic illness or who has lost a loved one.

The paperback and Kindle versions are available on line at Amazon and from Target, as well as at the Simon and Schuster website. Copies will also available at the Curious Iguana bookstore in Frederick, I will update the site when the book is available at selected sites in Ohio.
